Robot-stated limitations but not intentions promote user assistance

چکیده
Human-Robot-Interaction (HRI) research is typically built around the premise that the robot serves to assist a human in achieving a human-led goal or shared task. However, there are many circumstances during HRI in which a robot may need the assistance of a human in shared tasks or to achieve goals. We use the ROBO-GUIDE model as a case study, and insights from social psychology, to examine how a robots personality can impact on user cooperation. A study of 364 participants indicates that individuals may prefer to use likable social robots ahead of those designed to appear more capable; this outcome reflects known social decisions in human inter-personal relationships [7]. This work further demonstrates the value of social psychology in developing social robots and exploring HRI.

Web-Based Remote Assistance to Overcome Robot Perceptual Limitations
This paper addresses the problem of overcoming visual perception limitations in service robots with remote assistance from human users. In particular, consider a scenario where a user requests the robot to perform some task that requires a perceptual ability, e.g., check if a specific mug, “my mug,” is in the lab or in an office, but the robot may not know how to recognize that object. We propo...
متن کاملPersonalized Assistance for Dressing Users
In this paper, we present an approach for a robot to provide personalized assistance for dressing a user. In particular, given a dressing task, our approach finds a solution involving manipulator motions and also user repositioning requests. Specifically, the solution allows the robot and user to take turns moving in the same space and is cognizant of the user’s limitations. To accomplish this,...
متن کاملUser-Oriented Human-Robot Interaction for an Intelligent Walking Assistant Robotic Device
During the past decade, robotic technology has evolved considerably towards the development of cognitive robotic systems that enable close interaction with humans. Application fields of such novel robotic technologies are now wide spreading covering a variety of human assistance functionalities, aiming in particular at supporting the needs of human beings experiencing various forms of mobility ...
متن کاملRobot, asker of questions
Collaborative control is a teleoperation system model based on human–robot dialogue. With this model, the robot asks questions to the human in order to obtain assistance with cognition and perception. This enables the human to function as a resource for the robot and help to compensate for limitations of autonomy. To understand how collaborative control influences human–robot interaction, we pe...
متن کاملA generic model for estimating user intentions in human-robot cooperation
The recognition of user intentions is an important feature for humanoid robots to make implicit and human-like interactions possible. In this paper, we introduce a formal view on user-intentions in human-machine interaction and how they can be estimated by observing user actions. We use Hybrid Dynamic Bayesian Networks to develop a generic model that includes connections between intentions, act...
